In its West Coast premiere, composer-accordionist Ben Richter’s just-intonation accordion solo Laramidia creates an alien tonal landscape alternating among timbral fluctuations, melody and drone, and gradual resolution of shimmering, pulsing microtonal intervals. Inspired by nonhuman consciousness, Ben’s music orients toward new orders of magnitude in musical parameters to auralize the vast and infinitesimal timescales we do not experience in everyday life.

sfSound performs Crumb & Bussotti
sfSound Group remembers George Crumb (1929–2022) and Sylvano Bussotti (1931–2021), two composers known for their use of non-traditional notation. Bussotti’s classic graphic score Autotono (1958-1978) for open ensemble is bookended by Crumb’s Eleven Echoes of Autumn (Echoes I)(1965/66) and Dream Sequence (Images II) (1976).
Visiting from New York City, Yarn/Wire performs the West Coast premiere of Catherine Lamb’s Curvo Totalitas (2017) for two synthesizers, steel sheet, and tam tam. The work creates a sound world that is both meditative and intense, offering the audience a highly personal listening experience.

Phillip Greenlief’s Saint Petersburg
Brazilian electronic music composer Silvia Matheus explores the compositional possibilities of noise with occasional pitch centered sounds while pianist Ric Louchard explores the compositional possibilities of chromatic, pitch centered improvisations with occasional noise centered sounds.
Phillip Greenlief conducts a performance of his map score Saint Petersburg, with members of sfSoundGroup. Greenlief began composing his map scores series in 2004, a process that uses a collage approach to organizing compositional elements, including text score, traditional notation, iconic imagery, graphic notation, and fragments of maps that inspire free improvisation. The concert will be recorded by mastermind engineer Phil Perkins for an Evander Music 2024 release.

Diane Grubbe has appeared as a soloist with the Siena Music Festival in Italy, the San Francisco Concerto Orchestra, L’Orchestre de Notre Dame in San Francisco and the Calabasas Chamber Orchestra in Southern California, with whom she recorded the Vivaldi Piccolo Concerto for their CD The Baroque Concerto.
